Patricia ?Pat? Boord of Spotsylvania County recently returned home from a trip to Prague?the capital of the Czech Republic?where she competed in the 2013 World Masters Bench Press Championships.
Boord finished fifth out of five competitors, but said she was ?thrilled? with her performance because she had just three months to train after a series of health issues.
?I knew it was going to be a very tough competition,? Boord said. ?So I went over there with the intent of lifting more than I did the previous year at worlds. I wanted to set a new personal record and I wanted to get three out of three lifts, which I did.?
Boord had knee replacement surgery in 2012 and she also had a six-day hospital stay after suffering an infection in her spine. She didn?t train for four months.
She missed the opportunity to qualify for the world competition in August, but was asked to join the team in January after two other lifters withdrew.
?I was very blessed to be offered a spot,? she said.
Boord trained in Rockville, Md., and her son, Adam Boord, served as her handler.
Boord recorded lifts of 132, 143 and 154 pounds.
She said she was pleased to earn nine total ?white lights? by the three judges on her three lifts. White lights are awarded when the lifts are done with proper technique.
Boord said she?s now looking forward to the Virginia State Championships/American Challenge in Zion Crossroads next month.
