A man who suffered severe brain damage and paralysis after he was attacked has been able to communicate using words for the first time in 20 years, thanks to an iPad.

Kevin Beverley, from Barnsley, was left with catastrophic injuries after the random attack, including broken bones, right side paralysis and the loss of speech.

But he is now able to communicate through selecting relevant letters to form words on the Apple tablet computer.

The 55-year-old, who attends the Carlton Centre in Barnsley, run by the Disabilities Trust, has been able to request cups of tea and also tell staff what he likes.

At the end of the first day using an iPad he typed: ?It is so good to be able to speak again.?

A spokesman from the trust said it was an ?amazing result?

?Kevin had a voice to speak with. It is the first time he has been able to communicate with people in an effective manner for well over 20 years,? they said.
